RIP old cap hill. First Cricket, then Gabor’s, now Kelly’s?

In 2002, the lease ran him $850 a month; on the first of April, Wayne cut the final rent check for the 1,900-square-foot space at 1201 East 13th Avenue for $1,450.

Kelly’s closing bums be out. It’s where we’d go for something cold to drink on the walk home from Gabor’s on hot summer nights. The corner shop I’d run to in my PJ’s when I just needed the basics like smokes, water, batteries, or condoms. I was always greeted with a smile, and a “Hey Sweetheart”. If you needed something on a regular basis, they’d make sure to have it. If you were ever short on cash, it was no problem. They treated everyone in our little area like family.

“Doctors, lawyers, ex-cons in ankle bracelets, prostitutes, pimps, drug dealers, tweakers — we’ve seen it all,” he recalls. “This was the best show in town on a Saturday night. Colorful, so very colorful.”

Wayne had the best stories. The BEST. In the 8 years or so I’ve lived in Capitol Hill, the neighborhood has changed dramatically, but Kelly’s was always the same. I hope Wayne and Eva enjoy their time off, and start a new adventure together soon.

So many awesome things about this. :)

One of my oldest and dearest friends, Justin (who works at MATTER), cranked out this badass site on for one of my favorite places in Denver, Jelly. Check it out.

Denver, what are you doing tonight?

Come hang out with me and the fellas of GANGI. They will be playing, we will be dancing, fun will be had.

This is super short notice, so please spread the word, and get your ass there tonight.

Shit kicks off around 8pm.

High-five, Mr. McIntosh.

Denver Westword: Robert McIntosh wins $20,000 settlement after arrest for calling Boulder deputy a “fucking ass”

Last year, Robert McIntosh Jr. was so unhappy after being stopped for speeding that he dropped multiple f-bombs on the deputy who wrote him up.

The immediate result? McIntosh’s arrest. But now, Boulder County has agreed to pay a $20,000 settlement, and McIntosh’s attorney, David Lane, thinks that’s appropriate. “We have free speech in this country, and you have to have probable cause to be arrested,” he says. “And when cops abuse their authority, it makes us all less free.”

I, for one, am thrilled for McIntosh. I feel like giving him a high-five.

No, he probably shouldn’t have been a mouthy little prick. He was speeding, he got caught, he probably shouldn’t called a cop (or anyone, really) a “fucking ass”. As a lady, I strongly discourage this kind of behavior (shush.)

The fact remains, although it was rude, he has every fucking right to say whatever he damn well pleases. For a cop to be so unprofessionally butthurt over some obnoxious douche calling him a name, really makes me wonder how the hell this delicate little flower ever became a cop in the first place.

In Lane’s opinion, “the significance of this case is that cops just have to learn that you’re allowed to criticize them. You’re not committing a crime by being critical of cops — and because this cop has a thin skin, it cost the taxpayers of Boulder County $20,000.”

Tonight we drink to Robert McIntosh. Acting like a dick, and standing up for his right to do so.

That would be tomorrow, kids. Who wants to go? Lets ride bikes, get some coffee, and look at something beautiful, yeah? That sounds like a pretty good weekend to me.

Check out the Horseshoe craft and flea market! Get your hands on some prints from the fine folks at MATTER, or check out any number of the many other awesome, crafty things going on. The Food Network’s Great Food Truck Race is cruisin’ through, and hello, VEGANS? The seabirds truck will be there!

So, ok, you have no excuses not to come, right? See you there.

can someone loan me a shotgun to carry around for a bit?

there is a man living in my alley that is a dead ringer for the greasy good-turned-bad guy from those harry potter movies. (see how I totally made it seem as though I don’t know his name is snape, and haven’t watched those a million times? see that? oh fuck.)

he lurks around in the dark, follows me from a distance, and scares the shit out of me.

last night he whispered at me. WHISPERED. I prefer my alley-dwelling creeps to straight up yell shit at me.

this whispering, lurking, general scaring the shit out of me thing has got to stop.

Was invited to MATTER’s Design Night No. 1 - UNBILLABLE, so I popped in for a bit. The studio is amazing, as expected. The new letterpress is absolutely huge! It was nice to see my bro Justin, as well as meet some other rad people. I think it’s pretty cool of everyone over there to open their doors and treat everyone to such a fun night, I’m thankful for opportunity to be there. Wish I could have stayed for the whole night, but the swede whisked me away to a late dinner.

All in all, it was a good night.

ah, well this explains all of the sirens outside my window at 7 this morning. (thanks for sending the picture, gwynne.)

AWWWWW! I need to go to the zoo.
